S.O.S.

I just wanted to take a quick moment for a note about why I started this blog. There is so much debate about political issues these days, but at the root of it all is compassion. People want to help other people, but disagree on what that looks like.

For me personally, I chose nutrition. I believe that whatever is going on around someone, how they feel in their own body will always be supreme. If someone is chronically sick, low energy, not getting real meals, or cannot manage their emotions, then life will always be less than vibrant for them and their loved ones.

In junior high and high school, I took a few trips to third world countries to primarily spend time with children. I saw real, complete poverty, and young children caring for their even younger siblings in shacks made of tin lean-tos. But as I got older, I realized that there were similar issues in my own backyard, they just manifest themselves differently. I met school-aged children who maybe had 2 meals a day, and those meals consisted of Pringles and gas station burritos. Many of them were overweight, moody, covered in pimples, depressed, violent, and had very low self image and self esteem.

Soon it became overwhelming, realizing that I can’t be there for every kid to ensure they get real food and reverse the effects that their diet and lifestyle has had on their body and their mind. And on the other side of that, I can’t change the fact that most of the parents can’t afford to provide decent food, or that they just don’t know the importance of a nutrient-dense diet in a child’s life, even if they have more than enough money.

From all of this, I began to study nutrition. I realized my passion for it once I started working part-time at Natural Grocers, and I just wanted to learn more and more. Now, I am halfway through my course to be a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, and I cannot wait to finish and begin helping people in practical ways that can change the course of the rest of their lives.

Even if all I do it raise some awareness on things people may not even think about concerning food, I will feel like I did something. Sometimes the smallest adjustment in a way of thinking can be the trigger to new knowledge and eventual changes. I want to empower people to read and think for themselves, and to learn how to read their own bodies. This way, they can go on to lead a full, vibrant, happy life.

Thanks for following along with me on this venture!
